Vintage Airstream RV RESORT Spicewood, Texas

Vintage Airstream RV RESORT Spicewood, Texas

Simple, fun, and days filled with outdoor activities are the ingredients for my idea of the perfect road trip. This Texas adventure ended up having exactly all those ingredients to create my favorite road trip thus far! Spicewood, Texas is an easy 3 hour drive from DFW to far west Austin area. Nestled in the Hill Country between a general store, bbq joint and a golf course (or 2 or 3) is a tiny little slice of Texas named Open Air RV Resort. Open Air Resort is clean, well run, quiet and peaceful. It served as a great home base for us to refresh and relax at the pool every afternoon in between our adventures. We chose to stay in one of their vintage airstreams for rent named “Lucille”. I loved the location of the airstreams, The airstreams are situated extremely close to the pool, playground, pickleball court, Gaga ball court, fishing pond, and front office. It was an easy walk to get to anything on the resort. They also have a nice sized dog park if you bring your fur baby.

Lucille was the perfect size for our family of 5 with a full size bed in the back, 2 bunks, and another full size bed on the fold out couch. We were even able to easily open up a pack- in- play in the living room area. The kitchen set up was very simple and basic, and met our needs quite well. We had plenty of seating inside at the table and outside on the deck. In the evening we pulled out the yard games and would throw the frisbee around, and we definitely never passed up an opportunity to roast marshmallows! You would essentially never have to leave the resort if you packed your own meals or planned to grill. For me, I prefer little to no work on vacations, so we went out for meals. Also, the convenience store located in the front office had the perfect assortment of sweet treats for our afternoon cool down at the pool.

Y’all know we love some good BBQ in this family. Grab some grub at It’s All Good BBQ just a few minutes from the resort. Absolutely delicious brisket, sausage, and sides (and as many slices of bread as you want-score!) Try the tater tot casserole for something a bit different and yummy-especially if you are a potato lover like me. There are indoor and outdoor dining options, and very friendly staff. Your belly will be full and life will feel all good!

I can’t wait to tell you about our first activity in Spicewood! It was such an amazing discovery y’all! It’s been around forever, so it’s crazy I hadn’t heard of it prior to this trip. Let me introduce you to Krause Springs! Being that it is only a quick 6-8 minute drive from the RV resort worked out perfect for us b/c we were able to go twice in one day. It was tons of fun! There is an entrance fee to get in. The price depends on the age of the individual. You will receive a wristband to come and go as you please throughout the day. You will find expansive and elaborate gardens, MASSIVE trees, a natural springs pool, large climbing rocks, camping areas, and a waterfall and lagoon area. Not kidding-I must have said “this is awesome!!!’ about 50 times! Words like serene, enchanting, inspirational, magical, AWESOME (did I mention that one already!?) kept coming to my mind. I might just be easily excited to be out of the house, or maybe this place truly is special! Boasting some of the biggest storybook like trees i’ve ever seen, this is a must-do on my Spicewood list!!! For grown ups and kids alike who love to wander in nature, this is the spot. If you are needing some peace, inspiration, relaxation, meditation time to reset from life, this is the spot. I could have spent all day here daydreaming, but kids…haha. For more information visit https://krausesprings.net/ There is NO WAY my pictures will do this place justice, so you will have to go check it out for yourself. Be extra cautious if stairs and inclines are a challenge for you. Rocky areas can be slippery as well. There are restrooms on the property!

Our next activity was a further drive from the resort than some of the other places, but a scenic drive which we enjoyed. We drove to Dreamland in Dripping Springs. It’s an entertaining space that has incorporated fun “stations” (my term, not theirs) for all ages mixed with eclectic Austin art. There are interesting things to see around every corner. We chose to play miniature golf on the beginner course. We definitely weren’t ready for the challenger course yet. The kids loved the Willy Wonka themed putting greens and I adored the charm of the Texas flag putting greens. At the top of the hill is an outdoor venue. It would be fun to come back when live events are happening on the stage. If pickleball is more your thing, then they offer multiple shaded courts to play on. We took refuge under the large covered tent that is located in the center of all the “stations”. We were hot! For the littles, there is a splash pad to cool off. There is also a full bar and food options. I would come back earlier in the morning or in a cooler season and spend a lot longer time here. It was just too dang hot! My husband agreed that this was a super cool place to hang out for the whole family! For more information visit https://dreamlanddstx.com/

Our final activity on this Texas Hill Country trip was too cute and SO FUN! Especially if you love animals! The Exotic Resort Zoo is an easy drive from Open Air RV Resort. I loved how friendly, relaxed and knowledgeable the staff is. I love how easy the process was to walk up and purchase tickets (you have an option to buy online ahead of time), buy animal food, load the wagon and take a nice ride. We drove through approximately 137 acres spying, feeding, and petting around 60 different species of animals. The buffalo were muscular magnificent creatures. The camels, well, they always keep you on your toes haha! Whenever you have time before or after your wagon ride there is a small petting zoo area close to the front office and bathrooms where you can walk amongst the smaller animals and feed them. It is very well shaded with tons of picnic tables and swings for the kids if you want to hang out for a while. They also offer cabins to rent on the property if you want to extend your time, and be in the center of all the furry friend action. There is an option for you to drive your own car through if you prefer, but this wagon ride was WAY more fun! The staff has done a great job making this a wonderful family experience! By the way…never in my life have I thought a chicken to be beautiful, but whatever kind of chickens lived at this zoo were the most gorgeous chickens i’ve ever seen. No lie, and no, I wasn’t hungry lol. The softest, fluffiest feathers and most beautiful purple and blue color around the neck. Anyway, I just had to document the day I actually thought a chicken to be pretty. It was hard to get a good picture of them b/c they kept running from me! Go check it out! Can you see why this was one of my favorite road trips EVER!? So much fresh air, so much nature, so much beautiful hill country, so many activities, so many fun memories made! God bless Texas!
