In the Middle of Nowhere Texas…or Am I??

Craving some quality time with family or friends? Need to get away from all the noise of the city and just relax and breathe fresh air for a bit, but don’t want to travel far? Me, me, me! My hand is up!! I want ALL of that!

I KNEW this was the place when I saw it! A perfect way to have a “middle of nowhere” experience where you feel off the grid, surrounded by nature, and still be located less than five minutes from civilization for any essentials you may need.

Just minutes outside the small town of Lometa, Texas, tucked away on a quiet county road, is the Dancin’ Deer Ranch.

This beautiful ranch is perfect for large gatherings! Our 6 adults and 10 kids fit with no problems! The Dancin’ Deer Ranch has 5 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, and an office that is large enough to throw a queen sized mattress or several sleeping bags down.

There is even MORE room for playing and sleeping in the upstairs loft if you need it.

The kitchen area is fully stocked with all the gadgets, utensils, pans, dishes, etc. that you may need for cooking or grilling. The fridge/freezer in the kitchen has a good amount of space and another fridge/freezer is located in the laundry room. The view from the kitchen into the dining room and living room area is so grand and beautifully decorated. It is such an inviting space to gather!

We would have spent more time inside, but honestly the outside space was IRRESISTIBLE! We spent almost 100% of our time outside exploring, playing, and relaxing

Exploring was our favorite thing to do in the morning and at night. In the morning, after coffee of course, we would walk the property. One morning I couldn’t even wait until after my coffee to explore so I brought my coffee cup along lol. We would walk down to the pond and dock, and do some bird watching and peek at the fish. This trip we did not bring any fishing poles, but we should have! It’s on the list for next time. They have a nice table and chairs set up by the pond where you can stop and soak it all in as long as you want.

Then we would walk the fence line where the grass was a tad bit lower, and we would say hi to the neighboring longhorns. They were very friendly and gentle, almost smiling! It seemed like they had already had their morning coffee. You will also see beautiful Black Buck Antelope prancing (literally) around the property. The overall terrain on the property was quite rocky, especially around the front of the property towards the road and gate. There is a lot of tall grass and an abundance of cacti. I either wore my boots or jogging sneakers, but some kind of boot is really best if you are tromping around the 50 acres. The lawn area closest to the house is well maintained and easy to walk around on if you have something other than boots on.

After our exploring, we ate lunch and got straight to PLAYING and RELAXING ya’ll! Relaxing usually consisted of laying out the snack buffet, cranking up the indoor/outdoor surround sound speakers to 80’s/90’s country music, and playing in and around the pool.

Since kids outnumbered adults on this trip, we needed plenty of options for fun for the kiddos. Nature kept them entertained with all the twigs and rocks to collect, but there was certainly more this place had to offer. In addition to the pool, this ranch also has a treehouse, a fancy playhouse, kids outdoor play furniture and a swing that kept my kids busy ALL day. I’m not joking…my daughter rearranged all the furniture in that playhouse at least 2 or 3 times a day, and wanted to eat her meals in there. She grew very attached. Watch out daddy, you might be building her one of these soon!

All that playing sure did benefit the adults. The kids crashed HARD at night, which left the grown up kids with no choice but to sit around the fire pit with a glass of wine, and gaze up at the blanket of stars. I really can’t think of a time when I’ve seen more so clearly. I kick myself for not having a better quality, high powered camera to try and capture such an amazing sight. We would also peek out at the land with flashlights checking for wildlife, usually only finding the Black Buck Antelope peering back at us, and I’m kind of thankful about that lol.

This was a WEEKEND trip for me.
What I made sure to pack:
boots
outfits with several layers for the cool crisp mornings/evenings, and warm afternoons
snacks, beverages and premade meals
pool toys and floaties for kids
sunscreen and bug spray
small folding kids table and folding kids chairs-wasn’t sure if their picnic table could hold our huge crew of kids. Glad I brought it!

I am so thankful I decided to throw in the sunscreen. I applied a layer of Badger sunscreen on her face only once during her hours of swimming, and no burn. Unfortunately some of the spots I missed did not turn out as well poor thing. We switched to Badger several years ago and have never looked back. All 3 of my kids have sensitive skin, and I really needed something that wouldn’t irritate.

A couple of friends recommended the Badger brand to me and I loved the simple ingredients. My littles skin doesn’t get irritated from sunscreen anymore, and that makes me excited! I’ve since recommended this brand to other friends who have kids with sensitive skin, and they have reported back the same good news I’ve experienced. NO skin irritation.

I wish we could have stayed another night or two, but hopefully next time. We literally did not leave the ranch to do ANYTHING. We had all we needed, and it was great. Next time, if we stay longer, here are a few places we may visit in the nearby area:

  • Colorado Bend State Park
  • Fiesta Winery
  • Stoneledge Winery & Vineyard
  • Hanna Springs Sculpture Garden
  • Vanishing Texas Cruise on Lake Buchanan

The blanket of stars, crisp sunny morning walks around the property, the smell of the burning fire pit with charred marshmallows, and of course the UNINTERRUPTED quality time together, are emblazoned in my brain forever. What a treat! I savored every minute! I know you will too. I can’t recommend this little slice of Texas enough. God bless Texas, and God bless the Dancin’ Deer Ranch!
