Beat the Heat in Brownwood, Texas

Beat the Heat in Brownwood, Texas

It was the hottest weekend of the year thus far as we ventured out on a road trip to Brownwood, Texas. We were hoping something cool and refreshing would be waiting for us when we arrived. It was there, just looked a little different than we expected.

We stayed at The Hideout Golf Club and Resort in a family cabin (this was not a traditional wood cabin, but instead an upgraded mobile home). The resort was approximately an 8-10 minute drive from the town of Brownwood on a country road that mostly winds uphill leading to gorgeous views of Lake Brownwood; where the deer and turkey roam. There are several lodging options available from hotel rooms to tiny homes to non-traditional “cabins”. Our plan was to hang out at the resort pool most afternoons, but I made a rookie mistake and didn’t call to check and make sure the pool was open and available before we arrived. Unfortunately, the pool was closed for repairs and we certainly weren’t planning on golfing in the extreme heat, so we took advantage of the restaurant on site and the views of the lake from the surrounding neighborhoods. How else did we beat the heat?

LAKE LIFE

It was only a couple minutes drive up the road from The Hideout Golf Resort to Flat Rock Park on Lake Brownwood. It cooled us off in no time, and the kids had a blast finding unique rocks and shells.

This park had restrooms, a country store, covered picnic tables, and zero entrance fees.

RAILROAD MUSEUM

We visited Martin and Frances Lehnis Railroad Museum. This was by far one of our favorite activities! It’s an absolutely beautiful museum inside and out. They had the best activities to keep the kids engaged, including a build your own railroad area, miniature train ride, and a large display of model trains. This is a MUST SEE! Even if you aren’t a huge train enthusiast, you will have fun here.

GELATO

Make sure to grab a refreshing sweet treat at The Turtle Gelateria, where the portions are generous and flavors are yummy. We tried Chocolate, Cracker Jack (yes please!), and Mint Stracciatella. When we inquired as to the naming of the gelateria, she told us it was named as a reminder to slow down and enjoy the sweet things in life a little more. Wise words, especially for us city folks!

BOWLING

We went bowling at Rex’s Texas Lanes. A little throwback to some old school fun with hand selected old school tunes playing on the juke box. We didn’t have to wait for a lane on our trip, but I would still suggest calling ahead before you arrive.

Where did we eat?

Glad you asked! My mouth is watering just thinking about it. Honestly, we did not have enough time in one weekend to visit all the good eats. We did what we could!

The Hideout Golf Resort Bar & Grill serves breakfast, lunch and dinner with seating both indoor or outdoor. We enjoyed a nice quiet breakfast. The coffee and french toast hit the spot. Reservations are not required.

We HAD to try the famous Underwood’s Cafe -where the dinner rolls, cobbler, and hospitality overflow. Pick a meat and then get all you can eat everything else. If it looks like we tried one of everything, its because we absolutely did! I can see why this place is famous.

Runaway Train Cafe

This was a neat experience to dine in a train car. It really does have an old diner feel, and the food was delicious. Everyone cleaned their plate! Get there early…it gets crowded and seating is limited.

Teddy’s Brewhaus

This place is a gem. Its located in downtown Brownwood within walking distance to plenty of shops and activites. It’s massive on the inside and can hold very large parties, but also has quaint lounging areas. There is a back patio where they occasionally host live music, along with yard games and picnic tables. We tried practically every pizza on the menu, and I am not ashamed to say that I ate almost the entire brisket pizza on my own. It paired perfectly with a glass of their Appleonia apple beer. We enjoyed the evening munching and chatting with one of the very kind owners. You’ve got to try this pizza!

Sissy’s Red Wagon

I was craving an omelet and this place came through. It has ample seating and friendly staff-a perfect breakfast stop.

Aside from the delicious eats, what we loved the most about Brownwood was the laid back, easy going vibe and the AMAZING southern hospitality from the locals. Every place we visited people wanted to get to know us and were happy to share their story. Surely this humble town is where Texas gained its state motto “the friendly state”. God bless Texas!
