09 Sep Cavern day trip NeaR san antonio
How in 38 years of living and traveling in Texas have I NEVER been to Natural Bridge Caverns until now!?!? And why don’t I hear more people talking about this gem? This is amazing little slice of Texas is just the right adventure to add to your next road trip!
This is such an easy drive from the San Antonio area, We left for the caverns after breakfast and were back to our families house by lunch time.
I have to admit my first thoughts about winding my way down the depths of the earth, 180 feet to be exact, brought out some inner claustrophobia. Thankfully, the whole experience is so well set up with lights, wide paths (only a few exceptions), and guides at every turn to help if you need it.
We bought our tickets online the day before, but you can purchase tickets as a walk-up if you prefer. Prices change and vary throughout the week, but are advertised as cheaper online rather than walk-up tickets. We picked one of the earlier morning times, and it worked out great with the weather being cooler and little crowds. By the time we were headed out a few hours later the place had filled up quite a bit. I would recommend the earlier times. There are multiple cavern tours to choose from. We chose the most basic tour called the Discovery Tour. I’m so glad we chose it with our young kids accompanying us. The other tours were more adventurous, and did include some very narrow passageways. With the Discovery Tour, none of the walking seemed too difficult for any of us. They did an excellent job of creating clear paths with sturdy handrails the whole way. The length of time down in the caverns was long enough to marvel, but not long enough to need a bathroom break! Approximately an hour or so. That is a plus in my book! Natural Bridge Caverns has done an excellent job of creating sturdy and stable paths to walk, strong hand rails the whole way, and tour guides around every corner.
We were wide-eyed the entire tour, oohing and ahhing at the stalagmites, cave formations, and gorgeous natural spring pools. Every turn of a corner brought a “wow!!!” The first thing my daughter said when we exited the cave was “Can we do that again?!” I absolutely hope we can come back and do this again soon.
We did not see any bats this time, but maybe you will when you visit! If you want to expand your experience beyond caverns, they also have ropes courses, a giant maze, and gem mining on the same property. Close-toed shoes are highly recommended for this trip, and you are allowed to have bottled water with you as well.
I cannot recommend this experience enough! Don’t wait as long as I did to discover this little slice of Texas. God bless Texas!
