03 Oct Black Creek Farm & pumpkin patch
It’s October in Texas ya’ll! October brings HOPE of cooler weather, and ALL the pumpkins you can handle! Our family typically visits the same Pumpkin patches every year here around the DFW metroplex. While they have all done a great job of creating family fun, they have also attracted bus loads of people. This year we craved a quieter, more country and off-the-beaten-path type pumpkin patch experience. I am happy to report that Black Creek Farm & Pumpkin Patch in Decatur, Texas was the exact little slice of Texas we were looking for! While the pumpkin patch itself was on the quaint side, the amount of fun we had was BIG!
From our experience, this pumpkin patch is probably best suited for children elementary age and under. I do think people of any age can have fun here, but most of the activities are geared towards small children. My kiddos ages 2,6, and 8 all had a blast. This was the perfect setting for them. There were plenty of great photo ops, a playground and climbing equipment, yard games, bounce houses, a maze, a small tractor/train ride, a larger family hayride, and a petting zoo. Everything on the property was adorable and cute and the staff was very friendly.
I loved that we only had to share the farm with a few other families. No waiting, no lines! This was on a Saturday afternoon, when there weren’t any local field trip groups visiting, so keep that in mind when planning your trip. I loved that the pumpkin patch area was small, mainly for 2 reasons:
1. I could let the kids roam somewhat freely and not have to worry about where they ran off to. Mostly everything is within eye sight.
2. We spent more time on activities, and less time walking around a large pumpkin patch like we usually do.
The only thing we didn’t have time for was the maze. My kids are begging to go back already, so I have a feeling we will get to experience it soon. However, what I liked about the look of it was that the grass wasn’t higher than most kids height. Ha! You’d be able to find them pretty quick if they tried to do the maze solo.

The fun wasn’t over for us after the pumpkin patch! We drove just a few minutes down the road to downtown Decatur, and cooled off with some sweet treats from Hey Sugar. We apparently came on the right weekend, because the square was full of car club activity. My boys are obsessed with vehicles, so this was the cherry on top for us. While the boys drooled over fancy cars, the girls checked out an antique shop and strolled the square. We could have easily stretched this outing out longer since there were plenty of great options for dinner right in front of us, but we decided to pack it up. This was a fun Fall day for our family! Fall is the best 🙂 God bless Texas!
